Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 7th September service:

Summary

The final part of our series explores how to know what God’s will is for our lives. As followers of God we know that we need to make decisions with God as our guide and counsel, but discerning God’s will can be difficult to work out.

The passage in Proverbs offers us a good framework to work out God’s will.

Book recommendations:

Trust:

Trust is defined as a firm belief in the character, ability or strength of someone or something. Trust has some elements of emotion associated with it but it also based on evidence. When we are asked to trust, we need to look at the evidence of who it is we are being asked to trust.

Trust in the Lord

The word Lord is capitalised in our English Bibles because that is the name used for YHWH. It also makes a distinction between more general uses of Lord and when the Bible is mentioning God, the creator. The command have a firm belief in the One who created us. The evidence of why we can trust Him is found throughout the Bible.

In all your ways submit to Him

This is an act of involving God in your everyday, bringing Him into every decision, every step of your life.

Submitting to God is surrendering to His ways and handing over your worries about the future. Surrender allows us to walk in freedom.

And He will make your paths straight

Following God’s will is not necessarily a promise of everything you ever want to fall into place and life being perfect, it is living the life you have right now, being guided by God and having a peace and assurance that God is watching over you.

Discussion Questions to reflect on:

1. Think back on your journey with Jesus and look at the times He has been faithful.

2. Are there any areas that are more difficult to trust God in than others,

3. How do you approach God in prayer? Are you approaching Him with open arms.

4. Is the Bible your primary source for wisdom and guidance?

5. Which people in your community can you seek for good wisdom and counsel

Let’s pray:

Thank you Lord that you guide us and watch over us. Help us to turn to you when we are making decisions and are unsure of your will for our lives. Help us to be surrender to you in every way.
Amen
