Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 22nd June service:

We declare in the Nicene Creed:

“We believe in one LORD Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, with one being with the Father.”

We sometimes think of Jesus being separate from God, just as a parent and child, but God is different from us; He is beyond us. The one who is beyond us became one of us!

If we look at how Jesus is fully man, we know He was born as a baby to Mary, we know He ate and drank with others, felt grief and got angry. Jesus demonstrated emotions just like we do too.  But He wasn’t born to two human parents – He was conceived by the Holy Spirit to a virgin. The Holy Spirit – an extension of God – now became part of Jesus’ human form.

We can see in Philippians 2:5-7 it says:

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

Jesus Christ became the ‘middle ground’ between humans on earth and God in Heaven, He was the mediator, bridging the gap. His death on the cross and resurrection allowed the divide to be broken, and so we would be gifted eternal access to the Father, and the Father was represented to us.

In human form, others could witness first-hand His glory and ministry. His disciples learnt to be more like Him and then they too could disciple others using Jesus’ examples.

We know that Jesus is fully God too. Jesus performed many miracles whilst on Earth. He healed people, turned water to wine, helped rid demons and even rose Lazarus from the dead.

When Jesus came to earth in flesh, it gave way to human limitations, meaning that on the cross, Jesus died. However, being fully God meant that Jesus was in fact resurrected. When He rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven, we see His divine nature.

By being both fully God and fully human, we see that Jesus understands our struggles in life. He understands the highs and lows, the pain and suffering - BUT – because He is fully divine, being all powerful and everywhere at all times, it means we are saved.

Discussion Questions to reflect on:

1.   Read John 1:1-14 – How do you understand this passage?

As mentioned in the Sunday service, the subtle difference to using a capital W gives a different meaning to “Word”. Does this make your understanding different to before?

2.      Throughout the Gospels we read of Jesus’ actions – both as a human and as divine. What can we learn for ourselves and our future faith by Jesus’ actions?

3.      How would you try to explain to someone else that Jesus is both fully human and fully God after looking at this in more detail?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

We thank you for sending your Son to be humbled to human likeness to give us the ultimate gift of salvation. As we declare our faith by saying the Nicene Creed, we pray that your Holy Spirit continues to work through us. We pray for a blessing over our lives this coming week.

In Jesus’ mighty name,

Amen.
