Daily Devotional for Thursday 9th May

The parable of the mustard seed

Mark 4: 30-35

If you’ve ever seen a mustard seed, you’ll know how small it is. It is between 1 and 2 millimetres in diameter. It’s no coincidence that Jesus used this seed to show how much faith you need for God to work through us.

I remember when I went to normal on a mission trip to pray for people in the city. I was really worried about whether or not God would show up when I prayed for strangers. One woman who was begging for money asked me for spare change. I felt prompted by God to speak to her. I had no idea what to say except hello. As soon as I said hello, I could see 2 children in my mind. I asked her if she had 2 children and she was stunned and amazed. I got the opportunity to pray for her children and got to share God’s love her for and her 2 children. A moment that never would have happened if my faith was required to be the size of a sunflower seed or even an acorn.

God blessed us when we lean on Him. If the almighty God spoke the stars into being, He can surely do something amazing with our 1 millimeter in diameter faith.

Time to reflect…

Have you ever put your mustard seed faith to the test? Has there ever been a time when you have had to use your mustard seed faith?

Pause to pray…

Father God, thank you that we only need faith as small as a mustard seed to do your work. Thank you that you are always attainable and you never ask anything of us we cannot do. I pray you help us as a church to grow our faith in you. Help us to step out in faith so we can do amazing things for you. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
