Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 28th September service:
1. Let your light shine
Light is powerful. It illuminates our path, it helps ships navigate dark and stormy seas and guides them to safety. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14 that we are the light of the world. We carry the hope of the gospel into the world. Where there is war, injustice, sickness, disease, hunger and a lot of people walking around with fear and hopelessness, we can be a people that carry the light of Christ and the hope of the gospel to those around us. When Matthew 5:16 tells us to let our light shine, it means that we should let the light of the gospel be present in every conversation and interaction we have with others.
2. Blessed to be a blessing
We see God’s blessing over Abram’s life; throughout Genesis, we see this promise that God will bless him come to fruition. God’s blessing is described as divine favour and protection, and we see Abram blessed with livestock, land and the ability to rescue, even when he was disobedient. In Genesis 17, we see God rename him from Abram to Abraham, a promise where Abraham would become the father of many nations. We also see God’s blessing throughout the Old and New Testament.
We also read that Abraham will be a blessing to others. We cannot simply exist for our ourselves and our church, we have been blessed to be a blessing to others. We exist as a community within a community, we can be blessing to both the church and the wider community. We have all been blessed with different gifts and talents, interest s and abilities and we can use those to bless others. We can also bless others by offering things like time and a listening ear, we can bless by speaking up for those who cannot speak, we can bless by sharing resources and knowledge.
3. Christ’s Ambassadors
We are His ambassadors; we represent Christ in our everyday lives. David Guzik, creator of the enduring word resource, says, there is so much to the idea of being ambassadors! An ambassador does not seek to please his audience, but the King who sent him. An ambassador does not speak on his own authority; his own opinions or demands mean little. He simply says what he has been commissioned to say. But an ambassador is more than a messenger; he is also a representative, and the honour and reputation of his country are in his hands.
Much like an ambassador we are God’s representatives here on earth. We have been commissioned to carry the good news to people that do not yet know Him. We carry the honour and reputation of Christ.
Discussion & Application Questions:
1. What does it look like for you to shine your light to your colleagues, friends, family and strangers?
2. What barriers can exist that stop us from sharing our faith with others?
3. Where have you seen God’s blessing and protection over your life?
4. How can you be a blessing to others?
5. Are there any organisations, clubs or societies you can play a part in within the town or city?
Let’s pray:
Father thank you that you have placed us in this community, thank you that you have made us your ambassadors here on earth, help us to represent you well. Guide our thoughts and actions. Inspire our interactions with others and help us to be a blessing to the community around us. Lord, would you sustain us, guide us and make us bold that we may share your love with those people who do not yet know you. Keep our eyes constantly fixed on you. Amen
