Sermon Reflection Questions - Palm Sunday: Journey to the Cross: The King who comes in Humility

Mark 11:1-11

Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 29th March service:

Summary

This past Sunday, we celebrated Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, a humble yet triumphant act. People had gathered for the Passover festival, and Jesus chose to stay in nearby Bethany before making His entrance into the city. As He rode in, the crowd joyfully shouted "Hosanna!" – meaning "save us we pray," recognizing Jesus as the Messiah. Though they expected Him to save them from political oppression, Jesus' mission was more profound: He came to give them new life, offering peace and stability, symbolised by His humble arrival on a donkey, in contrast to the traditional image of a warrior king.

This event marked the beginning of Holy Week, where we see Jesus not only fulfil Old Testament prophecies but also challenge expectations. His peaceful entrance, instead of a mighty display of power, reflects His humility and righteousness. The same crowd that hailed Him would later shout for his crucifixion, but Jesus' death on the cross was not the end. Three days later, He rose from the dead, conquering death and offering a restored relationship with God. Through His sacrifice, Jesus demonstrated God’s immense, unchanging love for humanity, inviting us to share in His victory and experience God's love in a personal, transformative way.

Questions to pause for reflection/group discussion:

  1. How does the contrast between Jesus' peaceful entry and the crowd's expectations challenge your view of what it means to be victorious?

  2. What does Jesus' act of humility, riding on a donkey, teach us about leadership and strength?

  3. How can you experience and reflect God's unchanging love in your own life this Holy Week?

A Short Prayer

Lord Jesus, we thank you that you entered in humbly on a donkey knowing that you were going to sacrifice your life for us! Thank you that through your sacrifice you gave us freedom and that we can shout hosanna today knowing that you are the King who saves. Amen
