Sermon Reflection Questions - Graced Filled Generosity: ‘Willing and Proportionate Giving’
2 Corinthians 8:10-15
Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 11th May service:
Yesterday at our APCM, we reflected with thankfulness on all that God has done in our church and we look ahead with hope. In our reading from 2 Corinthians, Paul encourages the church in Corinth to give—not under pressure, but willingly, and in proportion to what they have.
Giving isn’t just about money. It’s about offering our time, talents, prayers, and love. God doesn’t expect equal gifts from everyone, but He does invite each of us to give joyfully from what we have.
We played a sweet-sharing game to show how unfair it is to expect the same from everyone. But giving in proportion—half of what each person had—felt fairer. That’s the heart of Paul’s message: not equal amounts, but equal willingness.
Paul reminds the Corinthians of the manna in the wilderness—some gathered more, some less, but all had enough. That’s God’s generosity in action. It’s not about some doing everything, but all doing something.
Looking back over the past year, we see God at work through many people giving in different ways. Thank you so much for all you do! Paul says, “Now finish the work”—keep going, keep giving, keep sharing the load.
Not everyone can give the same thing, but everyone can give something. That’s how church flourishes—not through pressure, but through joyful participation. True generosity is measured not by the size of the gift, but by the heart behind it.
Discussion Questions:
What stood out to you in today’s message?
What has God given you that you might offer back to Him this year?
What does “giving in proportion” look like in your life?
Can you think of a time someone’s small act of service made a big difference?
What might “finishing the work” look like for us at St John’s this year?
How can we be better at supporting one another in both giving and receiving?
What makes giving joyful rather than a burden?
What’s one thing you could start doing this week to play your part?
Prayer:
Loving God,
Thank You for all You have done in our church family.
Help us to be people who give—not out of duty, but out of joy.
Teach us to give in proportion to what we have, and to support one another with willing hearts.
Take our time, our gifts, and our resources, and use them to grow Your Kingdom here.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
