Dig Deeper notes from Sunday 13th July service:

Summary

The final part of our series exploring the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed ends with the statement; we look for the resurrection of the dead and the hope of the resurrection. Paul is writing to the church in Corith explaining the significance of what Jesus had done. He reminds them that belief in the resurrection of Jesus is of first importance and key and foundational to our faith. Paul reminds that:

-       Jesus died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures.

-       He was buried.

-       He was raised on the third day.

What we believe matters

Belief in the resurrection of Jesus is central to faith. The resurrection has world changing implications and it is the reason we gather as Christians across the world.
Through his resurrection Jesus demonstrates that he is victorious and triumphant over death and has bought us our salvation. It proves beyond reasonable doubt that Jesus is the Messiah.

The resurrection also reminds us that we, too will be resurrected. We will be transformed and be given new bodies when we enter eternity. When we think of heaven, we can envision an eternity worshipping Jesus.

What we place our hope in matter

The news headlines paint a picture of the state of the world right now. Adverts and social media are trying to sell products that offer us temporary happiness and hope but Jesus offers us a hope that is everlasting. RC Sproul puts it so beautifully when he says ‘’ It is the hope of Christ that makes it possible for us to persevere in times of tribulation and distress. We have an anchor for our souls that rests in the One who has gone before us and conquered.”

Discussion Questions to reflect on:

Take a few moments to consider these questions:

1.    What does the death and resurrection of Jesus mean to you personally. Write or share a short testimony of the difference Jesus has made in your life.

2.    Read Revelation 21:1-4. What is your current view of heaven? Does it match the version described in these passages?

3.    N.T Wright in Surprised by Hope writes “Why will we be given new bodies? According to the early Christians, the purpose of this new body will be to rule wisely over God’s new world. Forget those images about lounging around playing harps. There will be work to do and we shall relish doing it. All the skills and talents which we have put to God’s service in this present life—and perhaps, too, the interests and likings we gave up because they conflicted with our vocation—will be enhanced and ennobled and given back to us to be exercised to his glory.

What are your skills, interests and hobbies? Reflect on what aspects of these bring you joy.

4.    Are you hopeful for the resurrection and life everlasting? Take time to pray.

 A Short Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank you for the cross and that it means that we are set free.

  1. Thank you for the resurrection and the that we get to live with you forever. Help us to live a life that glorifies you and help us to use our skills and talents to your glory.

    Amen
